People often assume that I have had an easy or “perfect life” and do everything right all the time but nothing could be further from the truth.
Although I am a psychologist and professional coach, I have had many, many struggles in my life – all of which taught me the lessons I needed for the growth & expansion into the person I am today.
In 1997, in the middle of my doctoral psychology training program, I realized I was seriously depressed. The depression had probably been coming on for a while, but I hadn’t paid too much attention to it until I had become paralyzed with sadness.
The next 18 months were probably the darkest and ugliest of my life. I felt desperately alone, as though no one could possibly understand what I was going through.
I felt embarrassed and ashamed. How could I be working so hard to help others when I was doing so poorly myself!? For years after, even after recovering fully from the depression, I struggled with Imposter Syndrome. I was convinced I was a fraud because no self-respecting psychologist could possibly need help! OMG I was SO wrong!
I am not sure exactly when it was, but one of the most important things I started to accept was that:
I was unhappy because I was riddled with catastrophic thinking. Because of my social & cultural conditioning, I always expected bad things to happen. My mind was my worst enemy & I kept it filled with negative thinking. I had so much to unlearn but I was living unconsciously from my default programming & conditioning & it was making me miserable. But then I finally realized that I was the key person in charge of my mind, my life, and my choices. I was determined to cultivate more fulfillment, love, & joy in my life.
More than 2 decades ago, I became engrossed in neuroscience because, as a psychologist, I wanted to understand the impact trauma had on brain development in children. Along the way, I developed a much deeper understanding of how exactly the brain works, how it is conditioned, & why that conditioning causes people to behave the way they do. Truly understanding how the brain functions, & how it takes in and interprets information to create a narrative, explains everything you need to know about human biases, behavior, performance, & relationships. From this lens, I developed the skills and techniques I needed to live with intention & consciously rewire my brain to shift my thoughts & be more positive. I have used this information for my own continued growth & expansion & have been speaking & consulting on these topics ever since.
